A GROUND-BREAKING Adelaide business has created a system for individuals concerned about global warming to neutralise their carbon dioxide emissions.
CarbonPlanet allows individuals as well as businesses to buy carbon credits to offset the amount of CO2 they produce.Chief executive and co-founder David Sag said it was the first firm in Australia to offer tree-based carbon sequestration to retail customers. The firm wants a Sydney office before the end of the year, then offices in London and the U.S.
Mr Sag said the retail side of the business was aimed at environmentally conscious people who were looking for a way to do something effective about climate change.
"We spent about four years researching where to buy carbon credits, how they're accredited, what it actually means to sell someone a carbon credit.
"It's easy and genuine and it actually performs as advertised. Money comes in and projects which sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere get financed, and the carbon is absorbed and stored."
Mr Sag said that each year, the average Australian produced about 28 tonnes of CO2 - the gas responsible for global warming. CarbonPlanet would also be marketing to businesses which were committed to the triple bottom line - economic, environmental and social - which was increasingly being demanded by shareholders, he said.
"Currently, 100 per cent of our income comes from personal subscriptions.
"Now we're looking at corporate emissions audits as a service, because we've had a lot of experience now auditing events.
"We offset the whole of the Womadelaide Festival, 1290 tonnes of CO2 for the three-day festival. We offset that in collaboration with LandCare.
"There are plenty of businesses, whether because of the CEO or shareholder pressure, committed to the triple bottom line."
"We're happy and quite able to source carbon credits from anywhere in the world."
