Climos Leads Environmental Analysis of Ocean Iron Fertilization; Selects Tetra Tech as Partner

SAN FRANCISCO, California (March 27, 2008) -- Climos, a leading innovator focused on large scale techniques to address climate change, today announced that they have initiated a detailed environmental analysis of a technique called Ocean Iron Fertilization (OIF), which is a promising method to accelerate the reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide. This is the first time that an environmental analysis of an active climate mitigation technology has been undertaken by a private sector firm.

Climos has selected Tetra Tech, a leading multinational consulting and engineering firm with extensive expertise in environmental impact analysis to work with them. In 2007 Tetra Tech was ranked by Engineering News-Record as #1 in Water and #1 in Environmental Management amongst engineering design firms surveyed.

Tetra Tech, together with Climos, will develop a Conceptual Model and a Master Environmental Report as part of this process. The Conceptual Model will review the scientific background, experimental history, and recent research results for this technique, in addition to providing a detailed review and exploration of environmental questions and concerns. The Master Environmental Report will provide an environmental management framework to evaluate the characteristics and sensitivities of the affected marine environment. Tetra Tech has previously produced such environmental management tools for numerous governmental and private clients, including the U.S Environmental Protection Agency, the Electric Power Research Institute and Chevron Thailand. These efforts have helped to foster stakeholder consensus on complex environmental issues. Climos will use these studies to engage governments, NGOs, the scientific community and the carbon market in thoughtful and productive discussion on ways to move forward responsibly with further development of OIF.

Tetra Tech's efforts will be conducted by the Research & Development Group in Lafayette, CA. Tetra Tech's R&D; Group has extensive expertise in biogeochemistry, carbon cycling and coupled global climate modeling as well as expertise in developing thorough environmental impact reports for a wide range of projects. The team has previously been recognized for its significant scientific contributions and the ability to effectively communicate study results to a wide audience of interested parties and decision makers.

OIF applies trace amounts of iron to the surface of the remote open ocean. This process greatly enhances phytoplankton growth and ultimately sequesters atmospheric carbon dioxide into the deep ocean through the action of the "biological pump". OIF mimics the process of natural iron fertilization, in which hundreds of millions of tons of iron are deposited annually on the ocean surface after transport from the continents by airborne dust storms. Over millions of years, natural iron fertilization has resulted in the concentration of the majority of the world's mobile carbon in the deep ocean. Since 1993 there have been 12 publicly funded open-ocean experiments by research scientists to evaluate the effectiveness of the technique.
